Another Day, Another GOP Hypocrite

Democratic politicians, of course, are not immune from having adulterous affairs and other . . . um, moral transgressions as John Edwards reminded us not too long ago. But Republican pols have a knack for not only cheating on their wives, but doing so while piously subscribing to family values. Which brings us to Utah Senator John Ensign, who admits that he was screwing the wife of one of his staffers.

"I deeply regret and am very sorry for my actions," Ensign says in a statement, and that should be the end of it, but it's not.

The senator, a born-again Christian, is a card-carrying member of the Promise Keepers, one of those self-righteous groups that tell everyone how to run their lives according to J.C. and Friends.

Ensign will undoubtedly take a page from the playbook that Larry Craig, David Vitter and a host of other hypocrites read and will not resign. But maybe he ought to back off a bit on that promise-keeping shtick.
